It wouldn’t be about whether Bryant did it or not, because there was no way to write that story before the facts were presented at trial, but it would outline what ill-advised decisions had brought him to that point. At the end of editing the eight-page story, I was offered a byline on the cover by the top editor. It was an honor that I’d never before been offered, but I turned it down because of my conflicting emotions about the subject. As I expected, the article got massive coverage. I did many of the television and radio shows, mostly clarifying my thoughts on Bryant as a person.

The relationship ends in a torrid, graphic love scene with a partially nude Berry. Bassett challenged the mother’s treatment of the boy and various other subplots she deemed unrealistic and contradictory. The actress said she had this discussion with the producers of the film and felt her criticisms probably weren’t appreciated very much. Our talk then turned toward the obvious. Had Berry’s Oscar win made Bassett regret turning the role down? Bassett paused for a second and then answered with a firm no.

Never before had this been more evident to me A N G E L A BA S S E T T A N D W H O O P I G O L D B E RG than in my interview with the Academy Award–nominated actress Angela Bassett in 2002. Marvet Britto, a well-connected New York publicist and friend, represented Bassett during this period and offered me a chance to write a piece about how Hollywood had ignored the immense talent of this Yale-educated actress. The story was right up my alley given the success of my profile of Denzel Washington, as well as previous stories I’d penned about the plight of black actresses in Hollywood.
